Brett Favre, the Media Pimp

Unless you live a completely media-free life (in which case you wouldn’t be reading this), you’ve heard the latest Brett Favre news. Doctors have told the Minnesota Vikings quarterback that if he wants to return for his 20th professional season, he will need surgery on his left ankle.

According to several reports, Favre is faced with a choice: either undergo the procedure and return to the Vikings, or retire and end his 19-year NFL career. The three-time NFL Most Valuable Player is reportedly weighing his options.

Favre’s ankle, injured in the 2009 NFC Championship game, is still swollen and sore. He sent the test results to the famous orthopedic surgeon, Dr. James Andrews, who felt that Favre could not play without surgery.

“We talked,” Favre said in an email. “To play again, I would need surgery, as I suspected.” This decision would have been easy if not for my teammates and fans and the entire Vikings staff. One year really felt like 10-so Green Bay for many years. That’s what was missing in my heart, I guess, a sense of belonging.”

How does this sound to you? Does it sound like Brett Favre has finally accepted the fact that he too is not immune to the ravages of age and is seriously considering retirement? Or does it sound like he’s leaning the other way, given another comeback, a legitimate shot at the Super Bowl and a $12.5 million payday?

Sounds to me like he’ll be back. I think he will have surgery, miss training camp (which he despises) and get another shot at winning the Super Bowl. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

What stands out to me most about this whole ordeal, however, isn’t Brett Favre’s health or the tough decision he has to make over the next few months. What fascinates me is that, in the NFL offseason, right after the much-publicized NFL Draft, with the NBA playoffs in full swing, a 40-year-old quarterback still manages to garner such a large share of sports headlines.

Radio host and Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Stephen A. Smith often calls Brett Favre a “media whore.”

I’m a huge Smith fan and listen to his intelligent bombast almost every weekday on the radio. I usually agree with his take on things. But in this case, I believe Stephen A. is wrong.

No doubt, Favre loves the attention. He is coming off a stellar career, one that will place him among the top 10 professional quarterbacks of all time. He’s been in the spotlight almost his entire adult life, and he clings to it tooth and nail.

But Brett Favre is no media whore.

Brett Favre is a media pimp.

Let’s examine the dynamics of the macro whore for a moment. A pimp tells a whore where to go and what to do. A pimp uses a prostitute to increase his personal wealth. And if the whore steps out of line, the pimp demands some punishment.

Brett Favre has run the media by the nose for at least three years. He told them where to go and what to do when they arrived. It is very likely that he used the media to increase his personal wealth. And if a reporter has the temerity to question Favre’s motives, the quarterback has no problem cutting off the reporter’s access—which is tantamount to punishment.

Favre is by no means the only media pimp in this country. Most members of that species seem to live in the world of politics. Many people would argue that our president is one of them, and while I am one of the rapidly dwindling number of Obama supporters, I would be hard-pressed to find fault with that argument.

Media pimps are rare in the sports world, but they do exist. Tiger Woods is one. Michael Jordan, even in retirement, is one.

Brett Favre is one.

Just wait: Favre will have ankle surgery this summer. It will show toward the end of Minnesota Vikings training camp. He will begin the regular season as the starting quarterback for the Vikings. And you will hear about his every step during this process, because the media will tell you all about it.

Iceberg Slim would be proud.
