How to Tell If You Are Really a Hard Gainer
The definition of a heavy gainer is someone who has difficulty gaining muscle mass. Unfortunately, because the definition is so open-ended, it can become difficult to tell who exactly fits this description and who is simply trying to blame an outside influence for their lack of progress.
Let’s face it: if you never exercise… you will have “difficulty gaining muscle mass.” Does that qualify you as a heavy hitter then? Not in my book, but I’ve seen plenty of people apply the hard gunner label where it doesn’t belong.
So today let’s clear everything up once and for all. In my book, a true hard gainer is a person who has had difficulty gaining muscle mass due to their genetics. Not because of laziness or ignorance… but because his mother and father didn’t bless him with good muscle-building genes.
How can you tell if a person is gifted with good muscle building genetics? After all, we can’t open up someone’s DNA and look.
There is no way to know with 100% accuracy whether a person is hard to get or not. But luckily, there are some indicators we can use to determine whether someone is really struggling or simply looking for an excuse to justify their lack of progress.
Rule #1: If you’re a mesomorph… You are NOT hard to get.
There are three categories used to classify body types. I use football analogies to make classifications easier.
Ectomorphs are tall and thin and often have difficulty gaining muscle. Ectomorphs usually have long limbs and a fast metabolism. The ectomorph on the football field is most likely a wide receiver. If you’re an ectomorph… there’s a good chance you’re hard-earned.
Endomorphs strive for the highest classifications. Endomorphs can be characterized by a slow metabolism. Endomorphs usually have no problem gaining muscle, but they are plagued by excess body fat and have to constantly watch what they eat as they gain fat quickly.
An endomorph on the football field would be a linebacker or offensive lineman. Some endomorphs also have ectomorph tendencies when it comes to building muscle and can therefore be considered hard gainers.
Mesomorphs are blessed with what can be the perfect body type. They seem to gain muscle easily without worrying about gaining weight. Mesomorphs are the guys who look like they work out for hours every day, but shock everyone when they discover they’re actually doing nothing. A mesomorph on the football field is usually a well-built running back or strong safety. Mesomorphs are NOT heavy hitters.
Rule no. 2: Got weak calves?
The size of your calves is a good indicator of whether or not you are really struggling to gain muscle. In fact, the bigger your calves are before you start training, the easier it will be to gain muscle.
So… if you have weak calves, there’s a good chance you’ll have trouble gaining muscle. If you’ve been blessed with large calves, you probably need to have the potential to gain a lot of muscle. Conclusion: Weak calves are difficult to achieve.
Rule #3: If you have small wrists and small ankles… you may have a hard time gaining.
If your wrist is less than seven inches, it means that you have a smaller than average bone structure and as a result, this may indicate that you will have trouble gaining muscle mass.
If you have small ankles, it will probably be difficult for you to gain muscle.
Rule #4: Do you often get sick after only 3-4 weeks of weight training?
Skinny guys traditionally need more rest than average guys. While the average guy can train four or five times a week and still be successful, a heavy gainer who adheres to a similar schedule will far exceed his recovery capabilities and end up exhausted and sick.
If your strength stagnates and eventually stops within three to four weeks of starting a new program that allows you to exercise more than three times a week, this may also indicate a harder-than-average time to gain muscle.
Conclusion… And hope for the hopeless
Some of the characteristics of hard winners may apply to you, while some may not. It’s not an exact science, but if you find that two or more of the above points apply to you, there’s a good chance you’re a hard earner or have some hard-earner tendencies.
But there is hope for guys who struggle to gain muscle. Hard gains can gain muscle mass. They just have to follow a different set of rules. Because unless you’ve been blessed with genetics that make it easy to gain muscle, you need to follow a training program that’s specifically tailored for guys without great genes.
