To Money-Grubbing College Football Bowl Organizers: Call Off the Dogs Before You Ruin the Game

Years ago, going bowling after the regular season was a huge reward and a mark of excellence. Now it has become an absolute joke.

What caused this sad state? I’m glad you asked. The answer is money-grabbing bowl game organizers with dollar signs in their eyes. It’s all about making money at the expense of respect for the game, the players and their pursuit of excellence.

You see there are only 120 major college football teams in Division 1-A, which the NCAA likes to call the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision). NCAA think tanks like more and more bowl games because they believe it promotes the sport and becomes a money magnet.

It also kills the sport like a wounded animal running for its life after being shot by a sportsman, not realizing that even if it escapes its hunter, it will bleed to death.

The plethora of bowl games will eventually cause football to lose its appeal as America’s number one spectator sport. It may sound unimaginable, but I have been following or watching football for half a century and I see history repeating itself.

I remember when baseball was king in America, and when you thought it would never stop being the sport of choice. Then basketball became very popular among rivalries at the professional level. Then football became popular. I remember when pro football games weren’t even televised due to lack of demand. When you live long enough and pay attention, you see cycles unfold.

Professional baseball made the mistake of expanding to more and more teams and more and more playoff games. Soon the quality of the game was reduced, too much money was involved, and the game was driven more by money than the pursuit of excellence.

The baseball owners put awful teams on the field and people stopped coming. Some big cities wouldn’t even root for a bad team. Another sport became more popular then.

Here’s the kicker: We have 120 major league teams and now the bowl season has been expanded to 35 games. This means that 70 of the 120 teams will play in a bowl. The situation has gotten so dire that the NCAA is talking about a waiver because there aren’t enough bowl-eligible teams right now.

Today’s standard is 6 wins in 12 games – that’s just a stinking .500 record that doesn’t really deserve the award of a bowl game. Heck, you used to have to win 7 games to get to a bowl game. Now there is talk of letting teams with a 5-7 record play in a bowl game because not enough can qualify with 6 wins.

This is nonsense. One pernicious result of this is to reward incompetence.

It reminds me of parents who almost force their kid to play little league baseball when the kid could care less. He then plays 12 games for a team that loses every game and, as a reward, each kid on the team is given a trophy so their incompetence doesn’t hurt their feelings.

Parents also feel compelled to take photos of their little “stars” and put them on baseball cards as if they were some kind of big leaguer. How stupid. The kid learns that being zero counts for everything. It feels like nothing and it is nothing.

He is deprived of the blood, sweat and tears of trying to really develop skills, learn to become a team player and enjoy real, real life success – a far more valuable lesson that will help him throughout his life.

Last year, 71 teams earned bowl eligibility by winning at least 6 games, and 68 of them made bowl appearances. This year, 64 teams are bowl eligible, and 20 could be if they win again. The bowl selection will be announced on Sunday, December 5.

Unless someone in authority puts their foot down, we may soon see 60 bowl games involving every major school. It might make someone a lot of money, but the games will be terrible and players will be cheated out of something very important – the sense of success that comes from hard work and sacrifice and cannot be replaced.
