The Six P’s of Success

I learned the 6 P’s of success from my mother. When I was 12, my mother founded a non-profit youth entrepreneurship organization called Tomorrow’s Entrepreneurs Today. Its main purpose was to keep me and my friends off the streets and away from gangs.

For 12 years, she led a nationally recognized organization that received awards from the City and County of Los Angeles, California, and from Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. She had the United States Nonprofit of the Year award. There were thousands of children who were affected by her program.

The foundation of her non-profit organization was the 5 P’s of success (I added another P). Her P’s are:

  1. Passion (I added this P)
  2. Prayer
  3. Patience
  4. Persistence
  5. Persistence
  6. Productivity

I have been making money as an entrepreneur since I was 9 years old. From watering grass to owning your own vending machine company. I have worked in hospitality, network marketing and real estate. I found that passion is the key ingredient. Passion is the sixth P. Some of these jobs paid for my graduation, college, professional licenses and exotic vacations. Paper 6 P.

Here are the 6 P’s of success.

1. Passion: strong or extravagant affection, enthusiasm or desire for anything

In my 20s I was all about money. I went to school, got scholarships, invested in real estate, traded commodities, and was in management at UPS. I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur, but I was looking for quick money. I made money quickly and lost even faster.

I wanted a shortcut. I raised money for real estate projects that never materialized. I worked at a job I hated, and started companies in niches where I had no business. It took me years to find my passion for writing and speaking.

When I worked for an event staffing agency at the USC and UCLA football games, I noticed the passion of these young players. The passion was evident in their coaches, parents and their fans. For the players and students, this was a short-lived event in their lives. These players and students would graduate and move on. But at that moment they had passion.

Passion is essential to your business. I see that many people start a business because they went to a seminar, a friend asked them, or they stayed up late and made a commercial. I have made the same mistake many times. Don’t follow the money, follow your passion.

How enthusiastic are you about your job? How excited are you about your debt and living paycheck to paycheck? Do you have the same attitude about the work you do? Are you working in a position that matches your skills, talents and strengths? It took me until I was 35 before I started living my passion.

Passion is the fuel that keeps you going when sales are slow, when you lose contracts, when an affiliate goes out of business, and the city won’t approve of your plans. Passion drives you to turn your dreams into reality.

Before someone joins my team I ask them what their passions are. I want to know that they have a passion for internet marketing. If they’re not, I don’t need them on my team. Our passions must align because when trouble comes I want them to endure it.

Don’t worry if you are not working in your passion. Find out what makes you tick and get into it ASAP! I missed out on years of enjoyment because I limited myself to making money rather than working on my passion. Find your passion.

Choose a job and make sure you work on your skills, talents and strengths. I never thought I could make money writing and speaking. There are many people who achieve success and wonder, “Is that all there is?” Don’t be that person.

2. Prayer: a pious request to God or an object of worship.

The definition says pious supplication. Divine guidance will lead you to success. George Washington Carver prayed for some peanuts every day. Numerous products resulted from his inventions of that peanut. Because of his devotion to prayer, he created new industries from his discoveries.

This is not a debate about which religion is correct. I believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is my savior and I will leave it at that. Develop a relationship and spend quality time with your creator. Prayer saved me from mistakes. Prayer has guided me and is a key component in the 6 P’s.

Prayer can lead to breakthroughs in your business. That’s where your hunches and ah-ha moments can come from. Quiet time and calm bring clarity. Why not spend it with a higher power. I don’t like the word “Prayer”. Then find some time to meditate. Call it what you will.

3. Patience: the quality of patience, as the bearer of provocation, upset, misfortune or pain, without complaints, loss of temper, irritation and the like.

“God, I need patience and I want it now!” I struggled with patience. I want things to happen now and fast. In our society of instant gratification, text messages, 24-hour news feeds and get-rich-quick schemes, people expect success NOW. You are bombarded with losing weight in 5 days, make $10,000 this week and get it now without paying until next year.

My mother preached TTTT. These things take time. The law of the time of sowing and reaping is always in force. It takes time to test marketing campaigns, close deposits and build a client list. Building relationships requires patience. Are your 90-day goals extended to six months?

Passion and prayer give strength to your patience. Patience does not involve passivity. It takes courage to keep marketing going when funds are tight. Patience helps you study trends to take advantage of it. Patience is listening to mentors and people who have been on the same path as you.

Developing a long-term perspective is the key to patience. Put off instant gratification and keep the bottom line in mind. If doctors can spend years in school, you can do the same mastering your job.

4. Persistence: continuation of the effect after the removal of its cause.

That boring word that people hate. Perseverance is the active part of patience. I remember my mother being persistent in her organization. Bringing in funds, sponsors, events and transporting children from local schools to the entrepreneur showcases.

Persistence was the key to getting my real estate license, writing over 100 published articles and publishing 600 blogs. Perseverance is planting the seed and tilling the ground until you reap the harvest. Persistence is asking for sales, constant marketing and communicating your vision for your company.

Here’s a lesson in persistence:

· Mark Victor Hanson’s book was rejected 300 times before he and his partner sold 500 million books.

· Abraham Lincoln faced lost elections, the death of his sweet heart, and failed businesses before becoming the 13th President of the United States.

· John Elway lost 3 Super Bowls before winning a Super Bowl before retiring.

Persistence will serve you well. It is your best friend in life when you use it intentionally to become successful. Would you tell your child to stop trying to walk after falling? Look into your past and see where persistence helped you overcome obstacles. How did you feel? Also see where you should have persevered. Sometimes all it takes is one more try.

5. Persistence: steadfast persistence in a course of action, purpose, condition, etc., especially in the face of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.

To persevere, you must persevere. I remembered the failures I mentioned above. Those people endured. John Elway had three worst losses as a quarterback for a Super Bowl team. He was crushed by the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXX.

He was on the sidelines with Doug Williams in Super Bowl XXXII where Doug Williams broke Super Bowl records and the Washington Redskins posted the largest margin of victory in Super Bowl history. He was outplayed again in Super Bowl XXXIV where he was again outplayed by Joe Montana’s record-setting performance.

Three humiliating defeats. Did John Elway quit? Not! He continued to play and 8 years later he won his first Super Bowl, and the next year his team won again. This is a great example of perseverance.

Obstacles are on the way to realization. Failures are a part of life and a process in your business. Logically the setbacks make sense, but emotionally we don’t think it’s going to happen.

Disasters will happen. Losing your biggest client, your downline abandoning you, an escrow didn’t close, no one showed up to your meeting, or your presentation was terrible. That will happen. The question is how will you answer? How quickly do you get back on your feet? Will you keep pushing forward? That’s what perseverance is.

Think back to the times you persevered. It could be a project that took years to complete or the last rep in your workout. You have victories and these victories build your confidence.

6. Productivity: the quality, state or fact of being able to generate, create, improve or produce goods and services.

Are you productive? Plain and simple you have to produce to succeed. You don’t make money until you sell something. Your focal point is productivity, and sales is your priority. The bottom line is that you generate traffic, which produces leads, and those leads turn into sales.

Bring productivity to your sales teams and downlines. Busyness is not productive. Focus on revenue generating activities 70% of the time and your business will thrive. Build systems to help you become more productive.

Even a one-person empire needs systems. You, as a rainmaker, must practice Do it, delegate it, postpone it or delete it. You can outsource, hire your kids, or use technology to be more productive.

These are the 6 P’s of success that I learned from my mother and that I practice today. She still uses them in her business at the age of 74. Apply them and teach them to your family, friends and team.
