The Dish: Former Dallas Cowboys Fan Tells All

I used to be a Dallas Cowboys fan.

I really am: I was born in New England and came into the NFL consciousness in the mid-1970s. The six-year-old version of me latched onto the American team. Maybe it was a bright star. Maybe they were pretty cheerleaders. I was a Roger Staubach fanatic. I freaked out when Jackie Smith dropped a TD pass in the Super Bowl. I cried because of the futility of Danny White. I hate The Catch. I enjoyed the Jimmy Johnson revival, and I actually lived in Texas for three Super Bowls in four years. I suffered until the end of the 90s.

But I don’t root for Dallas anymore. Part of that is being a columnist; it is increasingly difficult to choose sides. But part of that is the 2006 edition of the team. It’s officially intolerable.

I like Bill Parcells. Obviously, I didn’t like him very much when he was the coach of the Giants, but I respected him. When he coached the Patriots, my favorite AFC team, I loved the guy. And when Dallas announced that they had hired him, I thought: finally. But Parcells is wavering. In every press conference, and on the sidelines during every game, you can see his career pass before his eyes. He’s had enough of this bunch of misfits, and who can blame him?

I’ve devoted enough pixel dust in this space to Terrell Owens. He is the poster child for what is wrong with American professional sports. But then there’s the punching idiot, Mike “Earring” Vanderjagt. There’s Drew Bledsoe, who looks like a classy guy, but is excruciatingly painful to watch playing quarterback. There’s an owner whose liposuctioned face looks like a crypt keeper and who insists on being the general manager, despite an undisputed record of absolute failure at the position. Hell, on this team, Terry Glenn seems like a good guy. They strut their stuff on defense like they’re good (they’re not), and they argue on the sidelines like they’re repeat cops.

This is an insufferable group of people to root for. They dominate the titles with silly non-issues (most of which, I’ll agree, revolve around Owens, aka the Baddest Guy Alive). They act like idiots when they win and they act like idiots when they lose. The milk curdled. The pudding has gone bad.

And here’s something I never thought I’d say: I don’t like the Cowboys anymore.

What is betting on the World Series? Was it mostly pro-Tigers before the series started? Has that changed as we’ve progressed, and the Cardinals have made it clear they’re not to be taken lightly?

BoDog Betting, BoDog.vs: The Tigers haven’t been favored as much as people would think so far in the postseason. With a first-round matchup against the Yankees, Detroit wasn’t getting much respect, and the more they won, the more the public thought the Yankees were a safe bet. They then faced a very solid Oakland side, where the action was mixed on both sides, based on who took the mound. After the preview was done, bettors began to take notice of Detroit’s talented lineup. In Game 1 of the World Series, we saw most of the money go to Detroit, who at that point had won seven straight in the postseason. But the Cardinals made a statement with a 7-2 victory. In the last two matches, two aces stepped to the top: Rogers in Game 2 and Carpenter in Game 3. The action in these cases was slightly heavier based on the star thrower. The Cards look very comfortable in the postseason, and have had plenty of practice over the last few years. It is quite clear with a 2-1 lead that they are running to finish this thing on their home turf.

What a crazy, down-and-out week in the NFL: Eight passes in straight wins, in my opinion. Obviously, this isn’t unprecedented, but I guess it’s been a pretty good week for the books? Care to tell us which games were the worst beats for the betting public?

BDB, BoDog.vs: It was a good week for books with a handful of big issues. Tampa Bay’s miraculous win over Philadelphia, Oakland’s sweep of an Arizona team that challenged the Bears, and Kansas City’s no-hitter at home against San Diego were three of the biggest hits for the betting public.

The NBA opens on October 31st (how creepy!). Right here, right now: Give us your NBA finalists and tell us why.

BDB, BoDog.vs: Cleveland and Phoenix. Cleveland because the NBA needs it; LeBron showed last year that the team has playoff potential. If he can get the team to the Finals now, the NBA can use the story to try to bring the league back to Jordan’s glory days. Phoenix because San Antonio is too boring, and if Detroit passes in the East, at least we won’t have to snooze through the NBA Finals again.

What do you think of the NFL’s decision to hold two regular season games a year on international soil? Do you think it will negatively affect the participating teams? Do you think it will do anything special for betting?

BDB, BoDog.vs: It seems odd that the NFL went international two games into the regular season. The preseason is understandable, but this could definitely add to the fatigue of the participating teams. Flying to, say, Japan in the middle of the week and returning to the US on Monday morning to prepare for the following week is definitely not going to be as easy as a two to three hour interstate flight. This shouldn’t have too much of an impact on betting, provided the games have the same TV coverage. Hey, who are we to question one of the most successful leagues in the world?
