The Rex Grossman Factor
What is the Rex Grossman Factor you ask? Why poor Rex? I’m from Chicago and he’s the guy for what I’m about to write. The “Rex Grossman Factor” consists of three parts, the first part would be to achieve a high level of success in your position, the second is to have your confidence destroyed by bully fans and the media, and the third is the complete collapse of everything you have aimed for your whole life.
Basically Rex Grossman brought a winner wherever he went. Led his Bloomington South (IN) High School team to the 1998 5A title, passing for 3,080 yards and 44 touchdowns. He was also named the Indiana Player of the Year and named to the All American team. Yes, Rex was on his way to do something special. Noted and labeled as one of the top quarterback prospects in the Midwest. Top five in the nation.
He went to the University of Florida. I’m not going to bore you with statistics and garbage too much, so bear with me. Rex was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in his sophomore year. Let’s face it, 9,164 yards in three seasons speaks for itself, even without a college defense. He broke all kinds of records, fifth all-time in his conference for passing, the list goes on and on.
Drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 1st round (22nd overall) and signed on July 25, 2003. Things were looking good for Rex and Chicago. We finally had a quarterback, even though he didn’t see a single NFL snap in his life, he was the bandage that would stop the bleeding of the Chicago quarterback. Rex was a winner, showing more promise than any quarterback the Bears have thrown on the field.
Rex was then ruled out for the start of the 2003 season, with Chris Chandler and Kordell Stewart getting the call as the starting quarterbacks under Dick Juron.
Goodbye Dickie, hello Lovie. 2004 Lovie, the newly appointed head coach of the Chicago Bears, proclaims “Rex is our quarterback.” Rex starts the season and three games in, has a season ending torn ACL. As Bears fans, we’re used to seeing our quarterbacks get beat up, so okay, we’ll have to move forward without him
Come 2005 and the Bears are looking great and feeling great. Rex then broke his ankle in a preseason game and missed most of the season. However, he was able to come back at the end of the year and put the Bears past the Green Bay Packers and clinch a playoff spot. And then he was defeated by the Carolina Panthers in a game where Rex was tense and nervous and never found a groove the entire game.
Now this is our year. Come 2006 and Rex is healthy and boy can he throw the ball, we all think as Bears fans. We went through the first half of the season, Rex was named September Player of the Month, had seven 100 pass games, and yes, five games that were terrible. He was primarily what we had to work with and he actually worked.
We’re going to the Super Bowl and Rex has already started criticizing almost everything he did on the field, getting us to the Super Bowl wasn’t enough for the media or the fans, we were looking for a general, a captain, to take charge and lead our troops to victory. Well, I don’t think Rex ever wanted it to be, but he had expectations that he created at the beginning of the season and he wanted to live up to them, putting so much pressure on himself to reach that level of play that Rex had started to mentally break down, he never found a way to consistently stay at the top of his game. Bears lose Super Bowl to Indianapolis Colts, season over.
Now, if you were to talk to any Bears fan, it was all Rex Grossman’s fault that the Bears lost Super Bowl 41. In fact, after that, everything the Bears did wrong was Rex’s fault. The media and fans just call for his head day after day, just say the most disgusting things and tear the poor guy down. It was awful.
Come 2007 and Rex gets off to a rough start when Trooper Field boos Rex Grossman just for being on the field, and chants Brian Griese’s name. The kid from Indiana with the golden arm that will take us somewhere is done. Having only played 28 games, Rex had a record of 23-5.
The “Rex Grossman factor” is what, of many things, makes or breaks all of these athletes, it’s not what you see on or off the field. But that’s what these guys have to deal with day in and day out. All the exposure they get, especially in a big city like Chicago, finding a way to keep a level head and manage all the crap that gets thrown their way.
I heard a song on the radio that someone remixed, about Rex Grossman, when the Bears were undefeated in the fall of 2006. He was our lord savior. A year later people want to see his head in the guillotine. Why, because he didn’t win the Super Bowl and he played poorly. He was criticized then to a degree that no human being should be, he’s not the devil and he’s not even that bad of a quarterback, but if you believe what you see and hear, you’d think Rex Grossman would eat your kids and take away your football team pop Warner into the toilet.
My heart goes out to any of these guys who make a mistake on the field and can’t handle the pressure. If we had people in our lives doing this to us every second of every single day, some of us wouldn’t be able to perform our duties, how about you. I know they’re professionals, and that’s what makes them stand out above everyone else, that’s why they get paid to play kid’s games and be role models and superstars. But the fans and the media make it something it doesn’t have to be.
Enough! Stop trying to tear all these guys down, to me it’s the same as people bashing Jessica Simpson for putting on a few extra pounds or Britney Spears is in a bar drinking a drink Why do we hold people like this to such a higher standard than ourselves. Just being in the public eye doesn’t make you any different than anyone else, we’re all the same. I hate that I think we live in a society where we make ourselves feel better about ourselves by making other people feel like they are totally inadequate. We are creatures of habit and repetition, most people who are bombarded with negativity, all the time, become susceptible to believing it themselves, practically breaking their will or desire to do anything.
So my friends the “Rex Grossman Factor”
