Does Soccer Superleague Hold The Key To One Europe?

If there is one common thread that runs through all European cultures, it has to be football, right? Perhaps in popular theory. But the conventional wisdom now hangs in the balance as the quest for almighty money – that is, the ultimate euro – has eroded the very fabric of football (no offense to Pete Rozelle, but let’s call it what it really is: football). As “European integration” becomes the buzzword for the 21st century, football is likely to play an integral role in facilitating or slowing down this cultural, political and economic merging of countries.

Football club owners have offered to help the cause by drawing up the framework for a future European Super League, which would consist of the region’s most elite franchises. Europe has already made a transformation in its display of athletics, whether its unbridled fans are willing, as investors flock to protect their stakes in what may be the most anticipated “money pot” in sports entertainment.

However, even top football officials have their doubts. FIFA president Sepp Blatter, arguably the most powerful man in world football, has said he strongly opposes a breakaway Super League.

Nonetheless, sports business experts insist that any successful venture into football integration would require ownership policy solidarity and fan participation. True, the previous situation is already growing at an explosive pace. Corporate investors have assessed the economic feasibility of supporting ESL franchises in various cities across Europe. Plans have already been proposed to compete with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) in forming the busiest super league. Media Partners International, a consulting firm based in Milan, has raised over $1.2 billion in investment from JP Morgan to sustain ESL in its first three years. Judging by the success of professional sports in the United States, there is no talk of the untapped potential of this league.

If there are still doubts about the growth of European football, consider the growth of player wages. Inter Milan recently acquired Italian striker Cristian Vieri for an estimated $43 million, which is less than the annual payroll of most professional franchises. And the question of whether Vieri deserved more or less than, say, Michael Jordan (excluding endorsements) is irrelevant. For now, football club owners can afford these superstars as consumers agree to higher ticket prices.

However, ESL owners must not dismiss the relationship between European fans and their respected teams. Football has served as a measure of national identity in every country for countless decades. As Europeans, during the process of integration, reflect on the potential emptiness of national traditions, football remains their only source of patriotic autonomy.

If the ESL goes through, then UEFA could drop one of its cup competitions, possibly the Cup Winners’ Cup. More importantly, UEFA remains to sacrifice the two fundamental principles that have sustained the existence of the organization – a commitment to distribute the revenue from the Cup fairly for all clubs and to televise all matches for free to European subscribers.

The ESL would consist of the top 32 European teams (mostly in the big market) competing in a comprehensive tournament to determine the European soccer champion. If the league is overseen by UEFA, it will consist of little commercial influence – in which case some officials suggest that without proper promotion or relegation, the league will lose public interest in less than three years. But traditionalists insist that UEFA’s policy, while diplomatic in nature, serves to protect the institution of football from the onslaught of manipulation by big corporations.

Even if the ESL and its big market teams are successful in growing the sport of soccer to an unprecedented financial and social level, there will undoubtedly be significant ramifications for the remaining franchises. Once again, the argument of income disparity between small and large market teams will take center stage. Instead of George Steinbrenner going head-to-head with Bud Selig, there will be a fight between two others – regardless of the fans, a key ingredient in any sport.

The decision on which ownership structure to emulate remains undecided. The real challenge at the moment is securing the support of the regional community. It is clear that the combined strength of European cultures, rather than individual national interests, will ultimately ensure the success of supranational football. Owners cannot and will not impose an unnatural medium of sports entertainment on their consumers. Most business leaders in the European Union have recognized that integration comes at a price – a lesson that football club owners will soon discover.

Despite the European Commission’s diplomatic efforts to balance competition with equal protection, budgets will continue to question the motives of not only the owners but everyone else involved.

The fruit of the ESL may or may not advance European integration, but the fight to protect one of Europe’s most precious assets – football – will certainly accomplish the task.
