The Big 12 Report: Week 9

A decisive week for the Big 12 last week, as Texas continues to improve and even moves up in the BCS rankings after its upset of then-ranked No. 8 Texas Tech in Austin, sending a clear message to the rest of the Big 12 South and North, they are the big boys in the block and a great candidate for the title of national champion. The season-ending date with Texas A&M in College Station is a big one, but Texas is headed for the Big 12 Championship regardless of the outcome of that game, and should destroy any North Division takers.

The picture became clearer up north last week as Missouri’s all-world QB Brad Smith went on a rampage at Nebraska and racked up over 450 yards of offense by himself in a blowout of the Huskers down 21, tied it at halftime, and then the Tigers were taken out by the Claws and that was a race meet for Brad Smith. Nebraska plays Oklahoma in Lincoln this week in what should be a good one, with title contender Northern Colorado knocking off Kansas in Boulder in impressive fashion 44-13 and traveling to Manhattan, Kansas to take on the K State Wildcats, which went down in flames against Texas A&M last week by just 2 points in a barn burner. It looks like a Missouri-Colorado race to the finish line in the North, as Buffalo has Nebraska at home the day after the turkey, and that’s a big plus for them. Stay tuned folks, the race for second place in the South should be a good one with Texas Tech and Texas A&M. Here are some shots of the Big 12 action this weekend

Colorado -7 @ Kansas State

KEY game for Buffalo and they are hitting on all cylinders offensively right now giving up 44 against a more than respectable Kansas defense last week as KB Joel Klatt continues his success with a 62% completion rate and 12 TDs to just 4 picks the year, far better than KB Allan K State’s Everidge, who has just over 800 yards passing on the year with 5 TDs, and KB Webb, who is the better runner, both trade playing time to find the right mix. K-State’s key to their downfall is averaging just 58 yards rushing per game over the last 3 games, meaning a stacked defensive line against them for nearly the entire game. The Buffs can generate points in a hurry with a solid trio of receivers and a great KB, and I’m looking for a 10-point Buffalo win here as K State struggles and loses 2 straight, getting outscored 89-48 in the process.

Missouri -5.5 vs. Kansas

For those of you who don’t know, this is a HUGE rivalry in Big 12 football that goes back to the Big 8 days. Missou doesn’t have a BIG win against Nebraska and even better for this scenario, it’s avenging losses to Kansas, and it’s a double revenge game. The Tigers offense with KB Smith at the helm is solid and can hit quickly in the wideout as evidenced by their balanced offense and over 540 yards per game in the last 3 games against Nebraska, Iowa State and Oklahoma State on the road. Kansas just can’t convert the punts here, and the offense is averaging nearly 300 fewer yards per game than the Tigers, who should get revenge on Kansas this week with plenty of confidence. Brad Smith is a difference maker again, plus the VRs from Missou have size over 6’3″ and taller, which creates mismatches with smaller DBs.

Nebraska -1.5 vs. Oklahoma- MY RESEARCHED BIG 12 GAME OF THE WEEK

Texas Tech -10 @ Baylor

I feel for the Baylor Bears, as they have surprised even myself this season, even going 4-3, but fatigue will be key this week in Wake as they take on an angry Texas team, which knocked off Texas last week in a huge loss in Austin. Bottom line here, with Baylor undefeated against Oklahoma, a loss to Nebraska the week before, and the Red Raiders looking to pick up some points here, it’s going to be a long day for the Bears and I see them taking their worst loss of the season this Saturday. I would put the points down, the Bears are not a good team in the red zone and Raiders head coach Mike Leech will take plenty of chances in this game.

That’s it for this week in the Big 12, be sure and stay tuned for next week’s reports and more top game winners from me in the Big 12 each week.
