NFL Reviews Week 13

Philadelphia over Houston. Michael Vic continued his push toward the MVP with another solid performance. The Eagles with all their talent and speed on offense held themselves to 34 points with two more dropped touchdown passes and took a long half cruising through the 3rd quarter to let the Texans back into the game. The bad news for the Eagles is that Vick has been hit hard by what is considered the weakest defense in the league. Vic isn’t the biggest quarterback in the league, but he’s stronger than he looks, but many times after getting hit, he’s been very slow to get up. The good news for him and the Eagles is that they have ten days to ice the bumps and bruises and for coach Andy Reid to figure out a way to lessen the punishment Vick is taking. The Eagles badly need a healthy Vic for the stretch run.

The Texans also have an explosive offense, but their defense has been their Achilles heel all season. That will be the reason they don’t win the division. The Texans have Andre Johnson and he’s so scared right now, even angry Eagle fans were seen giving him money before the game to help pay his fine last week.

Pittsburgh via Baltimore. The Steelers won a game that was as tough and brutal as advertised. It was like old school football where anything goes. Ben Roethlisberger just earned Toughest Man Alive by playing through a broken bone in his foot and breaking and twisting his beak early in the first quarter. Ouch! Not to mention he had to contend with a bloodthirsty Terrell Suggs the entire game. The Steelers overcame injuries, poor officiating, (Ben was hit in the head and Miller was knocked unconscious, but no personal foul penalties were called) and a strong blow to the Ravens defense to take control of the division. The sacking and removal of Troy Polamalu was a turning point in the game. Polamalu’s ability to make plays like this is unreal. The Ravens never saw it coming. Isaac Redman’s catch and smash was also huge. The Steelers’ determination kept them in the game until their big players made big plays.

The Ravens jumped at the chance to take control of the division and earn a possible first-round bye to the playoffs. They battered and bloodied Roethlisberger throughout the game. I’m not sure the Steelers would have ever scored a touchdown if Joe Flacco hadn’t fumbled after he was hit by Polamalu. It’s easy to look back, but how did the Ravens not see Polamalu lurking at the line of scrimmage? It would be so easy to switch the game to the other side. It was two past five. There was no reason to pass in that situation. Flacco also had a short-armed fourth-and-two pass. The receiver was wide open. You can’t miss those opportunities. I can’t fault Harbaugh’s decision not to attempt a 48-yard field goal in the swirling wind and cold. I can only fault the execution on the pass. Now the Ravens more than likely hit the road for the playoffs and it won’t be easy. The good news is that their defense will keep them in the game on the road.

Dallas on the edge of Indianapolis. The Cowboys won a game they would have lost earlier in the season. They made key plays when they had too and caught a huge break when the Colts were penalized for using leverage on a drive late in the fourth. That allowed the Cowboys to score the touchdown they needed. They controlled the clock with over two hundred rushing yards led by Tashard Choice. John Kitna was solid and didn’t turn the ball over. Even the much-maligned punter David Buehler had a clutch hit in overtime.

The Colts badly needed this game and didn’t get it. Falling behind 17-0 is never good. The Colts have no running game, and Peyton Manning’s four interceptions cost them the game again. Manning applies pressure and his footwork is terrible. He often drops his toes and doesn’t see the whole field. He also makes bad decisions. Even with Manning’s error-prone game, the Colts still had a chance to win. The leverage penalty on the field goal attempt was as big as Manning’s four interceptions. The Colts now face an uphill battle just to sneak into the playoffs.

Chicago via Detroit. The Bears just find a way to win close games. It’s just their year. The Lions just find a way to lose close games. It’s not their century.

Green Bay above San Francisco. The Packers won in the ugliest uniforms in NFL history. They should be burned immediately. The 49ers haven’t beaten a cold weather team since Joe Montana was the quarterback.

Kansas City via Denver. The Chiefs were almost caught looking ahead but escaped with the win. The Broncos have now proven they can lose out of boredom.

Atlanta over Tampa Bay. The Falcons and Matt Ryan rally to win another close game. The Buccaneers had this game under control until their old school orange jerseys caused 11 fumbles on the Falcons’ kickoff return for a touchdown.

New Orleans on the edge of Cincinnati. The Saints are so explosive on offense, but they needed the Bengals to fall for something that had never been done before. “Drag you off the side with a heavy shot count” trick.

New York Giants beat Washington. The Giants did what they wanted on offense and defense. The Redskins were inept in every way except showing up on time.

Minnesota blasts Buffalo. The Vikings have proven they can win without Brett Farve. But Farve was there in the spirit Tarvaris Jackson threw and interceptions. The Bills finally lost the inconsequential problem and looked relieved in the process.

Cleveland edge Miami. The Browns have now won two straight for the first time this season. Too bad the city of Cleveland really didn’t want a win over Miami. The Dolphins are now on their way to the always-dreaded five-hundred season.

Oakland over San Diego. The Raiders won a game that many thought was impossible since the Chargers hadn’t lost in December since 2005. The Chargers must have spent the week checking out the Los Angeles housing market.

Seattle via the Carolinas. The Seahawks win allowed the Seahawks to keep their bowl goal intact. The Panthers are hoping the season ends today so they can have the No. 1 pick in the draft.

St. Louis over Arizona. The Rams finally snapped their losing streak against the Cardinals. Cardinals coach Whisenhunt finds it’s hard to win when your quarterback is Kurt Warner
