Emmett Till, JFK, and the Radical Right

The Emmett Till case has been getting a lot of attention lately. Thiel became one of the first martyrs in the American civil rights movement of the 1950s when he was killed by radical right-wing extremists for flirting with a white girl.

Till was one of dozens. For twenty years, beginning in the 1950s, federally mandated integration brought violence against both blacks and whites. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, seven Americans died in 1963 at the hands of extremists who opposed racial integration.

We have added 3 more victims to the SPLC list.

John F. Kennedy, Lee Harvey Oswald, and Dallas police officer J.D. Tippett died in the same terror of angry southern whites who bombed four schoolgirls in Birmingham a month earlier. Is desegregation the reason JFK was killed? Not completely. Not by itself. Southern white rage against forced integration with blacks found its most popular outlet in the form of the “White Citizens’ Council,” which in turn brought together Kennedy’s most extreme enemies.

My colleague Paul Trejo at the University of Texas traces the precursor to the JFK assassination in the establishment of the White Citizens Council (VCC) on Black Monday, 1954. Most of us know Black Monday as the stock market crash, but in the American South, Black Monday is when Earl Warren handed over the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision, famously deciding separately is NOT equal in terms of schools. Paul says,

“The immediate reaction to Black Monday … was the sudden appearance of the White Citizens’ Council (VCC) in Mississippi, throughout the South and the North.” Robert B. Patterson, a football star and World War II paratrooper from Indianola, Mississippi founded the first VCC in July 1954. Patterson declared the NAACP “the enemy” and vowed to fight hard against anyone who supported the NAACP in any way.

“In addition to the VCC, states’ sovereignty and states’ rights organizations have sprung up in the South with the same message—it’s tyranny for the federal government to dictate that local schools should be racially integrated.” It’s a decision that just has to be made. Still, as the VCC unfolded, Brady’s scathing Black Monday story won’t produce private schools, boycotts, or even one successful politician.

“Although some southern states voted to abolish public schools and even passed laws to establish private schools, they never materialized at the state level. States like Virginia and Louisiana passed laws establishing 100% segregation as well as banning the NAACP. These laws also gained some traction, although they temporarily halted the growth of the NAACP in those communities.

“In 1955 ten thousand SSC members gathered to listen to Senator James O. Eastland speaking about states’ rights and the benefits of segregation. However, in Mississippi, on May 7, 1955, the Reverend George E. Lee, a black priest, was killed for advising blacks to vote. On August 28, 1955, Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black man, was killed for whistling at a white woman. Two men were tried, pleaded guilty and acquitted.”

Hopefully, Emmett Till will find justice in 2018, sixty-three years after his death. We think that accepting the case of Emmett Till is essential to finally understanding and pinpointing the killers of JFK.
