A Story From The Stands – What Have Former Nebraska Football Players Learned From The Game – Frosty

GREAT GAME FROM A BIG NAME

You can be sure that many people will remember the “show”. It came in the second quarter of the 1973 Orange Bowl game against Notre Dame when Johnny Rodgers threw a touchdown to Frosty Anderson.

“I shouldn’t have been on that play,” Frosty Anderson said. “We knew the play was going to be there and it was going to be an easy six. He was and the rest of the night was a disaster for the Fighting Irish. But it’s not the game that Frosty considers his best game.

“The Wisconsin game was my best game,” he said. “We kept falling behind and then I finally scored to put Nebraska ahead. I thought it was going to work, but Wisconsin came back and scored. Then Tony Davis went to work with one of his three rushes for about 30 yards each.” Nebraska won.

“Somebody came up and made a comment that I had something like nine catches and 160 yards,” Frosty said. “I didn’t think much of it even though it turned out to be an I-back type of performance.”

It’s not surprising that Frosty was able to put on a memorable performance against a Big 10 team. He comes from Big 10 roots. His father, Forrest Sr., who was better known as “Fordy,” coached basketball at Michigan State. The family moved to Scottsbluff where his father accepted a position as a basketball coach. Frosty became a standout for Scottsbluff and caught the eye of Nebraska coach Jim Ross during the Scottsbluff-Fremont game.

Coach Devaney knew Frosty’s father from his days as an assistant football coach at Michigan State.

“I always assumed I was going to Michigan State, but when the Nebraska offer came in, I thought what the hell and signed,” he said. Not a bad decision when you consider that just two years later the young Scottsbluff star would be wearing a national championship ring.

Like all freshmen in those days, Frosty started out in Nebraska’s freshman football program. That team had only one loss. “We lost to the No. 1 Kearny State team,” Frosty said.

“Jim Walden was our rookie football coach,” Frosty said. “He was my first experience with a ‘south-mouth’ and he preached three things: be agile, be mobile and be the enemy.” Frosty redshirted his sophomore year.

“I’m what was known as the other team’s hope,” he said. “To play at Nebraska, you have to be at your best, you have to be responsible for what you do and you have to be patient. That’s just the way it is.” Frosty was knocked off the scout team and was “blackshirt bait” before earning his day in the Memorial Stadium sun.

His first collegiate touchdown came on a pass from Van Brownson during the Utah State game. “It was withdrawn and worse,” Frosty remembered as a smile came across his face. “He almost knocked me over and I had to lay down for it, but I got him.”

Patience and practice paid off as the talented split end moved up the depth chart. He made highlights of ABC Sports with the 3rd clutch. down and 15 yard catch against Colorado. “It was a precise pattern from seventeen yards down and out and I caught it.”

Not everything went Husker’s way during Frosty’s senior years. “We went to California to play UCLA and Mark Harmon and they beat us. I lost my starting job that game,” Frosty said. Oklahoma also defeated Nebraska 27-0. “It was almost seven years before I stopped taking that loss to Oklahoma personally.

Despite the losses, Frosty earned all-conference honors in his split end as well as academic honors. “I met Mark Harmon at an academic event and he told me they were really scared of Nebraska. That surprised me.”

Pro scouts also took notice of Frosty. The New Orleans Saints drafted him in the eighth round as a wide receiver. His professional career lasted two years. During his first season, he came on late in the first half against the New York Jets, with Joe Namath at the helm, and separated his shoulder. “They had to keep me because of my contract, but I got fired the next year.”

That ended football for Frosty Anderson. Frosty is still in great shape and an avid runner. “Not the marathon stuff,” he quickly pointed out. “I don’t have time for that.”

If he turns just a little in his office chair, he can look out his 11th-floor office window and see Memorial Stadium, but football memories don’t overwhelm him. “When you have kids, you soon find out they’re not impressed that you played for the Huskers. They just want their diapers changed. It didn’t take long for me to move on.”

And he became a unique fan. “People should remember that they are only children. The children can’t hear you. No one had to tell me that we played a bad game or that we lost a game. We knew that. It’s just a game.”

Not in Nebraska, Frosty, especially with a big name like yours.
