PES 2013 – The Only Video Game For Footy Fans
PES 2013 by Konami launches on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and PC this fall and will give FIFA 12 a run for its money this year if online goons are to be believed. The PES franchise has been around for 16 years and has progressed through many iterations in both title and gameplay, so what makes Pro Evolution Soccer so popular?
If you live in North America, chances are this event will just pass you by, unless you’re a die-hard ‘soccer’ fan, but if you live in the rest of the world, Europe to be exact, then as any PES fan knows, the football season starts in August , but you won’t be able to play your own fantasy until October, when the latest and greatest version of PES hits video game store shelves.
It all started back in the days of video games, actually in 1996, when Goal Storm was released on PlayStation. Since then, PES has gone through several naming conventions and the latest update will be called PES 2013. It will go like the previous 16 years with Electronic Arts (EA) and their masterpiece – FIFA (12). There are really only these two games that compete for gamers’ money every year and if anything that makes the competition even fiercer.
You see the two games have battled year after year and this year PES has a chance to get back to the top of the heap. It’s been lagging for the last 5 or 6 years, partly due to complacency, but also the resurgence and sheer brilliance of FIFA.
The facts of this case are, Your Honor;
FIFA (which stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association) as the name might suggest, is an officially sanctioned football game, which means that the game is full of all real player names, team names, football kits, competition and stadium names. PES never had these rights and had to rely on the editing mod and the ingenuity of the players who buy the game to recreate all the aforementioned details, liveries and stadiums. This has fostered a powerful online community purely based on editing interests, but when coupled with the obvious benefits of playing PES, you begin to understand why the popularity of the game is still so high.
So what are the advantages of this game?
Well, the compromise in the licensing situation was always outweighed by the sheer beauty of playing PES – it’s a game for small fans. The actual game has always been more reflective of the actual game, while FIFA has traditionally suffered in this area. Playing PES in the first few years was always pure fun, the games were high but varied, FIFA always felt rigged and the ball never behaved like real football, too much floating. By comparison, PES soccer balls always had weight to them and challenges between players were meaty.
The analogy between the two games is that FIFA is thought of as a Premier League or Champions League setup, it looks slick and has the support coming out of the ears, but it’s not actually real football, it’s a pre-packaged version of the game designed to trap glory-hunting football fans, those who shout how great their team is despite knowing nothing about their team’s history.
Pro Evo on the other hand is pole vaulters, dirty knees and eating soggy Cornish scones on a cold, wet Tuesday night in Barnsley! The analogy can be lost on many and to some extent it proves the point, football isn’t always great, multiple skips and pink Nike boots, it’s about non-premier league teams that still have fans turning up for every home and away game, despite they haven’t seen their team win anything for years. It’s real football and that’s what Konami tried to capture, despite being in Japan.
They’ve largely succeeded, but the line between the two games has blurred in recent years. FIFA has now moved closer to the whole ethos of PES, some say their game is actually better, I still don’t agree with that statement, but certainly with the online patches now available to PES players, they can bypass the licensing issue and create a photo -realistic players, teams and kits – meaning the two games are very much on a collision course to meet in the middle.
Konami has delighted its fans in previous years by securing the licensing rights for the England national team, two Premier League teams and various other leagues and players across Europe and the world. This has undoubtedly helped, but give me a fake name of Man Red (Manchester United) and a quality game any day against the FIFA version of football. At the end of the day I buy football computer games because I like to play games that recreate the beautiful game, FIFA does it well now but PES does it better and I just hope that the next part of PES 2013 will give me that option again to lead the mighty Derby County to the European glory!
