Small Sided Games and Youth Soccer – Drills Versus Letting the Kids Play

Why would a gender-specific football strength and conditioning coach go off the reservation, so to speak, and post a video about small games and training?

The answer is really very simple! I recently spoke to a group of soccer coaches about specific strength and conditioning training for soccer. The seminar went well and I thought all questions were answered when, somewhere in the back, someone asked my opinion about using indoor soccer techniques instead of traditional soccer drills. Well, he did that, he asked my opinion! Over the next 45 minutes we discussed all aspects of small game technique, pros and cons, and I have to tell you it was a heated discussion.

When the question is what would I use, what did I use? The answer is complex to say the least. Small-sided games compared to the traditional way of training with drills, drills and more drills would seem pointless. Honestly, I believe there is a place, and in fact a need, for both. That being said, I’m very much in favor of small games and, as the title suggests, letting the kids play! I used a video, not mine, but made by one of the US national team coaches, to illustrate the technique of playing on the small side and its advantages. The video is a pretty tame version of what I used to do as a trainer. To be fair to the coach in the aforementioned video, he was teaching them a new technique and, as such, the kids weren’t quite right yet. When used correctly, game speed is greatly improved by using the small side game coaching technique.

Game speed and ball touches are key to the development of any soccer athlete. The main advantage of small games is that your players touch the ball as much as possible. As the game progresses, the emphasis can change and the constraints focus so that you have to touch the ball once, twice, three times before passing and you have to complete two, three, four, even five successful passes before you can attempt to score. You can go two on three, you can have a neutral midfielder. In other words, mix it up depending on what your team needs, its weaknesses and strengths.

The small game coaching technique is a fully customizable model. The real advantage of a small game is that it is fully customizable, fast and, in many cases, on the go. During training, you can notice the need, adapt and continue training. With drills, kids stand in a line, wait their turn and have limited touches on the ball. A small one-sided game eliminates this drag and keeps kids playing. The latter is far more intense and effective in many ways.

This little game was used extensively in the United States Youth Soccer Association (USISA), Ohio-Northern Youth Soccer Association (OISAN) D licensing clinic I attended years ago. The licensing clinic was a great opportunity to learn from one of the early proponents of the small side technique, Dr. Tom Turner. At that time, the debate over indoor soccer technique was reaching its peak, and Tom was one of the main proponents, especially in Region II, but also nationally. The highlight of his classes? Agreed! Little games. Well, the crowd was about 90-10 against by the end of the clinic. By then, every coach had been sold except for one. There’s always one, right? And this was an intense class, every football coach from almost every premier club (top level club team) in Ohio-North was in that class, and several coaches from nationally ranked high school and college teams, such as Walsh Jesuit. So it was a tough crowd, but Tom won over almost every trainer, not by instruction but by demonstration. Prove it? Overwhelming!

As small sided games gained in popularity and favor, there were still a few setbacks, but the vast majority, at every level, now see the benefits of small strategy. It’s been almost fifteen years and the little game is a model, of course. I would have said feet down, but it didn’t sound right and my English teacher at primary school would have rolled in her grave!

Exercises from the past? Some things are retained and sometimes the terminology remains, but the defined practice is different. Unfortunately, exercises have remained firmly rooted in our lexicon. Regardless of the military connotations, the word exercise should be put to bed once and for all. In fact, one of the training methods I’m currently using is called 205 Exercises! UGH! But the guy is good and has some really useful strategies. Do I think it could be better? Yes! Are there better programs out there? A little! So until we do, we read, learn, learn and share. That’s what the football community is and I’m sure it will continue to be that way for the foreseeable future.

The small game coaching technique is now the primary method for coaching our young, and not so young, soccer athletes. The evolution was quick, all things considered, and knowing how long the old drill model was in place, I’m actually a little surprised there wasn’t a little more resistance…and there was a lot. Just ask Dr. Tom! The advantages simply overwhelmed the old strategy, making it obsolete and irrelevant. However, like most outdated and irrelevant things, it has a way of sneaking back in. In this case, I think the small side game has established itself as a favorite forever; time and results will tell.
