100-0 Basketball Score? What That Means to Those of You Coaching Youth Football

100-0 I kid you not

One of the biggest youth sports stories this month comes from, of all places, women’s basketball. If you haven’t heard of this one, you really need to get out more, the story has gone viral. While I’d rather watch paint dry or get chunks of wood stuck under my fingernails before attending a girls basketball game, there might be a lesson here for us youth soccer coaches. A small high school in Dallas, Texas for children with ADD and ADHD with only 20 students lost last week 100-0. That’s right, sports fans, Covenant Christian ONE HUNDRED, Dallas Academy ZERO, that’s not a typo.

The score at halftime was 59-0, and at the end of three 88-0. What was so interesting about this story was that the winning team, Covenant Christian, pressed for almost the entire game. Dallas Academy rarely drove the ball over half court, turning the game into what observers called a “layup drill.” Dallas Academy hasn’t won a game in the last four seasons, not a single one, so it wasn’t like Covenant was up 98-0 and feared that Dallas Academy would go on a 100-point streak itself. In fact, as Covenant approached the century, Covenant’s head coach and a large number of their fans cheered wildly. I have one word for that, WOV. I am amazed by the result, and even more by the attitude and actions of the head coach and their “fans”.

No apology needed

When Covenant’s administrative officials apologized for their coach’s actions, Covenant’s head coach snapped his neck and said he did nothing wrong. He claimed that his children were playing the game the way it was meant to be played. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those Stuart Smalley guys, you know the “let’s not keep score, play every player the same amount, drink juice boxes and sing Kumbaya together after the game coach”. Remember my teams went 97-13, we play to win, we don’t play Intramurals.

The value of competitive sport

Competitive sports are a great learning environment for most kids, but in my opinion this coach has gone over the top. When you’re in the lead, there’s nothing wrong with securing a win, working on some skills and tactics your team needs to work on improving, and getting your backup reps to perform basic offense and defense. But when it’s obvious you have the advantage and the other team has no way to come back, why do you keep pressing? One would think that after they were able to push themselves to an 88-0 lead in the third quarter, it would be obvious that your kids would know how to push against a hapless rookie team. But what about working a half court game or ANYTHING other than the press?

What did the Covenant kids get out of the broken spirit of the Dallas Academy team? Maybe the girls have learned that when you have someone out, punch them right in the face a little more and then rub their faces in concrete for good measure.

What then?

Why not let go because you can? When you’re up 88-0, it’s obvious to every player, coach and parent who the best team is, no doubt about it. Heck, even a disinterested janitor or a small dog in mom’s bag will know that one team was vastly superior to the other team. What harm would it do if you didn’t press in the last quarter or maybe play a couple of kids out of position? Instead, Dallas Academy has now canceled the rest of its games. Was the Dallas academy incompetent? Of course. Probably poorly trained. Will any of these girls go on to play college basketball? Not. But the Academy kids will now be deprived of the chance to grow as human beings and develop the deep relationships that most kids get from playing competitive team sports. I hope Coach Covenant is proud of that. maybe he can put that on his resume when he applies for the Duke or Kentucky job.

The coach gets his

Ultimately, Covenant’s coach was fired a week later because he fundamentally disagreed with the school’s decision to apologize to Dallas Academy. The Academy may be having the last laugh, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban will host the Academy team in his suite at a Mavericks game. We hope this story teaches those of us who coach youth soccer a valuable lesson about what not to do. While we didn’t have any video of this fiasco, Coach Phantom suggested this video clip as a pretty close representation of how the match probably went down. I’m sure the coaches and fans were as giddy as they were on this video of their “HUGE” win.
