Wacky, Weird but True Youth Football Stories
More “war” stories about coaching youth football
When we go out to private clinics, we get to hear some of the most amazing stories from your soccer coaches. Some of what you have to endure may have made even the Old Testament Job wince. I’ll never forget a story I heard last year from a youth football coach who ran my system for the first time. The boss of his organization was against it from the beginning, the boss wanted this team to stick to his “tried and true” Power I. Mind you, I have nothing against the Power of I, we’ve run it for years past. BUT The power I didn’t work with this group of kids and this organization teams were constantly losing, losing big and most importantly, losing players.
From the worst to almost the first
Well, a friend of ours decided to try our system out of near desperation after another losing season. His team went on to go 9-1, a huge improvement over the previous year’s 2-win season. His team quadrupled its offensive production and had 9 different kids score a touchdown. You’d think the head of the organization had given this coach a gold wristwatch and the keys to the city, right? No, he said to our friend, “You’ll never beat Team X with that offense,” so our hero team wins 9 games, makes it to the Super Bowl and loses the championship game, has fun, includes all the kids, and keeps everyone and everything the big cheese can to say is “You will never beat team X with that attack” ?????
Last place coach advises Super Bowl coach
Keep in mind that the crit team not only didn’t win a game that season, they only scored 4 touchdowns the ENTIRE SEASON. I’m not kidding, I’m not exaggerating one iota. Gaul someone with such meager production criticizing a coach who made a 180-degree turnaround? As unbelievable and ridiculous as this sounds, it is so true and unfortunately more common than you think. Just be prepared to bite your tongue and be diplomatic, there are many parents and even coaches with no history of success who either think they know more than you or are so jealous of your success, they will try to discount it at every turn. All you can do is smile, bite your tongue, and hope that one day he reads a copy of Atlas Shrugged.
Guaranteed reward for football coaches for youth stupidity
Another story that comes to mind involves another executive of an organization. I hope I have my facts on this, if not, it’s very close. Like many organizations, this one has 2 teams in each age group. While the teams should be evenly matched, they are not, all returning players are transferred to the “anointed” team, all leftovers and starters go to our friend’s team. Our poor friend knows that the only way his team is going to survive with his “land of misfits” lineup is to do something different than the other teams in the league. He finds the website, buys the material, drinks the cold brew and becomes a believer. As you probably guessed, this team starts out slow, but by the end of the season they are the most improved youth football team in the league (almost all starters) and end up going 6-2-1 if I remember correctly, even giving the “anointed one”. “The team is a very surprising run for its money.”
Next season it’s the same story, all the best players were chosen for the greased team, all the beginners and less athletic kids were “thrown” into this team. On top of this, the organizational boss is so worried about the “remaining” team beating his anointed team that he took 4 extra players from the remaining team just a week before their first game. Can you imagine? Well, our friend ended up having a great season, beating a greased team and only losing to the eventual league champions, with a makeshift lineup. The coach told me that many other coaches in the league would show up to watch his games, not to scout, but to see all the misdirection and precise ball movement in his offense with very average kids. He ended up getting a ton of compliments from a number of coaching peers last year after these games. Hats off to the coach for being cool and focused on the kids and his ultimate goal, not an organizational leader or what he didn’t have for the players. By staying positive even in the most difficult and stupid circumstances, he gave the kids and the coaches a season to remember.
Coaching youth soccer in an upside down world
Guys, youth football is not perfect. But know that if your situation isn’t perfect, or if you’re nipping at your heels with the green-eyed monster of jealousy, you’re not alone. Be prepared for it and expect it, even if you’re doing everything right. Keep the end goal in mind and teach your children to reach their full potential. Unfortunately, that flaw of jealousy is part of human nature. Try not to take it personally.
