Performance Based Contracts For Football Players

Many of us have been left with a bitter taste after an exhausted World Cup campaign, so much was promised but nothing was delivered. Our taste is made all the more bitter by the fact that each of the players and our manager have returned home comfortably wrapped up in their exorbitant salaries and premiership status.

Something that seems worse than our poor performance and the ignorance of our players is the fact that Fabio Capello, after aggressive contract renegotiations, will remain as England manager for another two years. The contract now says that regardless of performance he will remain in his multi-million pound job until the end of his contract or until he decides to resign. Now he can relax, safe in the knowledge that he realistically won’t have to deliver anything again before the next tournament, and even then the expectations won’t be high. To get him out of his contract, the FA would have to pay a figure of around £12m, as well as the remainder of his wages for the remainder of his contract.

This again raises the question of the ridiculous salaries of today’s footballers and management. They may be worth the money when they’re scoring goals and lifting trophies, but otherwise they’re undoubtedly overpaid. Many have argued that the introduction of performance-based contracts would act as the best possible incentive for any player or manager, as their ‘hard-earned’ money would really have to be ‘hard-earned’.

Most footballers and managers wouldn’t go hungry if they missed out on a few paychecks, in fact many would never have an empty fridge due to lucrative endorsements, so why not give them a ‘no win no fee’ contract. Although the possibility of no pay is not realistic, clubs could offer a basic rate of pay for each member of the squad with an attractive bonus scheme for good performance, this would ensure that every player on the pitch gives their best and those on the bench train even harder to get opportunity to shoot. The contract could even state that if a player or manager simply doesn’t play, they could face the sack or be sold to another club.

The reality is that today’s football is plagued by a generation that is more eager to chase gold than to raise it. Contracts and performance-based pay would have to be rolled out league-wide rather than on a single team, and even that could see many players jump ship to warmer shores and deeper pockets.
