The Reverse – Not a Miracle Football Play For Most Youth Football Teams

Miracle Football Games – Reverse is not a magic bullet

Most of us think of reverse plays as those where the flow moves outward in one direction and then there is a handoff to a wing, slot or end going in the opposite direction of the initial flow. These long back-to-back or end-to-end plays work well against poorly disciplined youth soccer teams. At the youngest ages like 6-7 where most teams and players are undisciplined, they often work against everyone. But the rule of thumb is that the better coached the team you’re playing for, the less likely it will work the other way around. If your opponent has tremendous speed and your team is slow, there is little chance that the reverse will be anything but a negative yardage play, as the defense has the speed to overcome the initial misstep.

In the last 6 seasons, the teams that played us and ran reverse plays only had one carry for more than 10 yards and none went for a touchdown. I figure 80% of the reverse plays against my defense go for negative yards. Our defense is designed to exclude turnovers and reversals, and we put our most patient and disciplined players only on the defensive side and of course we “fit and freeze” the hell out of reverses and bootlegs.

Before calling a reverse play in youth football, you need to determine if the team you are playing is disciplined or not, if so, reverse is a terrible play. You need to scout the defensive end and the corner on the backside of your sweep moves to determine this. I don’t know why anyone would bother to reverse us, because if they were looking at those keys, they would have seen the show, no way.

In youth football, many of these reverse plays are also run “bare,” have no lead blockers, and rely on all 11 defenders being duped on the play to make it work. When only one player is not fooled, the play goes into negative yardage and if your ball carrier fumbles in the space behind the line of scrimmage, there is a chance for a big defensive play. Reverse plays in our book are very fast hitters, run very close to the line of scrimmage and have 3 lead blockers. We often average over 15 yards per carry with this play and rarely have negative yardage plays.

In order for this play to work consistently for us, we just need to fool 3-4 defenders while pulling the linemen and have a lead run blocking to gain a numerical advantage at the point of attack. The flow looks like a swing to the opposite side, the play side looks like a power play with 3 lead blockers. When I played youth football 100 years ago, we used to do a wing flip to even block the trap, that was a flip. The reverse trap scheme works well, but the worst designed and worst reverse plays are the bare ones.

Many youth football coaches go into reverse too soon. Complementary play must be set up and run the crowd to make sure the flow goes from reverse. In one memorable game, the “Select” team ran backwards 7 times against us. The first didn’t come until the 3rd snap of the game, for a negative yardage. Of the other 6, only one went for positive yardage, and even that went for very little gain. I guess this very successful youth football team was used to this play working and instead of checking their keys, they just thought it would work against every defense.

Another reason many reverse football plays go negative yardage is the depth of the play from the handoff back to the ball carrier is often 5-6-7-8 yards deep and most use an outside handoff. When the reverse has to angle behind the player he is receiving the handoff from, he naturally has to bend deep to receive the handoff and continues that path deeper into the backfield before he can increase the play. The deeper he goes, the greater the chances of a big negative play. In youth football, we prefer an inside handoff on reverse plays to move the runner toward the line of scrimmage and keep it shallow. This reduces the risk of the play and gets the runner on the field much faster.

In youth football, reverse can be a very dangerous play for the defense, but when run incorrectly, too often, too deep or bare, it can be a very dangerous play for the offense as well.
