Speed Development in Youth Football – A Few Qucik Tips For Developing Speed

Speed Development

For the second year in a row, my youth football program is doing an abbreviated “football speed” development program in the spring. The program is designed to develop enthusiasm for playing in our program while working on form and developing “soccer speed”.

The program is called FASTT for Fun, Agility, Speed and Technikue Training. The program is divided into three segments, the first segment is the development part of “soccer speed”. Here we work on developing form, speed and quickness using modern plyometric movements integrated into soccer movements. In this part of the program we use a combination of body weight, ladders, cones, medicine balls, box jumps and harnesses.

Development of basic skills

The second segment focuses on developing basic fundamental soccer techniques. We do not use pads for this. We concentrate on breaking down each fundamental soccer movement into learnable steps and then perfecting them. We don’t do our schemes or football plays, this is all fundamental skill development and drills and skills change daily.

Game time

The last segment is part of the purely fun team competitive games. Many of these team building games have little if anything to do with soccer. What they do for kids is help them develop a bond with each other and help them develop a keen sense of competition while having fun.

This is not conditioning, this is a process that helps build momentum and enthusiasm in our youth football program. It also shows players and parents how we work with children and gives children an understanding of our expectations and communication methods. This certainly helps us in August when many teams struggle through the first few practices, we can quickly move into evaluations, teaching fundamentals and setting schemes.

Next Seasons Teams

As I may have mentioned in the past, we are expanding our program to 4 teams, ages

6-7 Flag Team, 7-9 Year Catch Team, 10-11 Year Catch and 12-13 Year Match. Next season I will be the head coach of all 3 teams, after being the head coach of 2 teams last year. The reason I have all 3 teams is because the parents want it that way and I am preparing 3 head coaches that I want to work side by side with me for a season before I hand the team over to them. While several of these future coaches have great credentials, youth soccer is about much more than the X’s and O’s. In

When I expanded Omaha from 1 team to 16 teams in 5 short years, we didn’t take the time to do a hands-on apprenticeship program and we outgrew our infrastructure. We now have a Head Coach Development Program that will prepare anyone to be an effective youth soccer coach.

FASST Over the Summer

The FASST program lasts 7 weeks and starts on April 1st, we meet once a week for just 90 minutes. We want the kids to be very hungry for contact with us, and many also play baseball. We leave each player with a written summer development program that they can use if they so choose. We show the parents what we are looking for in the movements in the group presentation in May and leave them with a written exercise plan. I let the parents know that I don’t care if the junior does any movement in the summer, I just let the kids be kids and make sure they spend a lot of time in the heat. On the other hand, we have a few kids who are really stubborn and if they want to do something on their own over the summer, we give them the tools to do it.

Doing Speed Camp or activities like FASST has helped set us apart from other youth soccer programs in the area and gives us a nice follow-up to the fall. Our league rules do not restrict this type of activity in any way, please make sure and check the league rules before you start.
