The basis of basketball in our country is developed and nurtured at the level of youth basketball. The quality of commitment and coaching at this level can make a huge difference in the overall health of basketball in the United States.
Those who coach youth have an incredible opportunity to mold young people into students, players and young men. Character and values, along with a sense of teamwork, listening and hard work form a solid philosophy of youth coaches. However, all too often this important work is taken haphazardly and pursued with little effort and dedication. The result is a group of young men who are uninspired by the game of basketball and carry with them apathy and poor skill development.
At CoachRB, our goal is to facilitate and challenge youth coaches to take their assignment seriously and learn all they can before and during the coaching experience. We are here to guide and give youth coaches the tools they will need to positively lead and develop young basketball players in our communities and in our country.
Hats off to those of you who put your heart into coaching youth sports. Your countless hours and effort are used to improve the skills and enjoyment of thousands of young players. Overview of positive experiences in youth basketball Coach’s perspective
1. Develop your own coaching philosophy
a. Determine your main reason for training.
b. Be flexible and adapt your philosophy to your daily learning and experiences.
c. The young people you train must be your first priority.
d. Let’s keep it extremely simple……this goes from youth to the NBA.
2. Communication with young people
a. Develop the art of communication with children. This one skill will be the key to your coaching fulfillment and children’s enjoyment.
b. Watch the game to the end their own eyes, not yours.
c. Instructions must be positive or constructive only.
3. Work with parents
a. Being a leader means setting guidelines for parents and players. By doing this, you will minimize most potential obstacles with parents.
b. Let the players and parents express your policy and philosophy.
c. Keep the child’s best interest in mind as if it were your child.
d. Define “success” and share this with parents and children THEN work to meet that definition every day.
4. Develop a foundation program
a. The best coaches are those who know how to play in passing, dribbling, shooting and teamwork I I can teach this to my players on a daily basis.
b. The basics of teaching are step by step, every day.
c. Place a “The Game of Mastering the Basics” where players are tested on their ability to demonstrate key fundamentals. By doing this, players will be constantly working on passing, dribbling, shooting and teamwork. WHY? FACT – NBA players aren’t even “masters” of the basics of the game, so why would we think kids are?
d. Always sacrifice core work and solid practice for games. At a young age, we play too many games in our country.
5. Establish a positive, energetic practice environment
a. Share your practice goals with the players before each practice.
b. Design simple, single-purpose drills that involve all players.
c. Keep practice short and to the point, mixing basic emphasis with 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 competition.
d. Use the practice checklist to help organize the exercises.
e. End the exercise by discussing the outcome of that day’s goals.
6. Playtime—Teaching life lessons
a. Games are for kids, period. Make this your goal and you will greatly improve your chances of enjoyment, fulfillment and success.
b. Set a playing time in advance and stick to it at game time.
c. Attack- If your players can pass, dribble and shoot, they can play. Design an offense that is space and movement oriented, NOT play oriented. Coaches with “games” undermine the whole experience. Leave the games and fancy strategy to the older kids.
d. Defense – Teach players to run back, pointing to the player they are guarding. The concept of “staying between your man and the ball” MUST be properly taught to the players.
e. Teach players to run into and out of play.
f. Meet your team before and after the game away from the floor. Talk about how great the opportunity is to play and remember the basics of the game. You are learning lessons that will stay with these young people for a lifetime.
They may not remember you in 30 years, but they will what did you teach them!
7. Evaluation—pre-season and post-season
a. One of the biggest mistakes coaches make is to avoid this crucial opportunity to help their players.
b. Before the season, evaluate each player against a menu of skills that will be learned during the season. Do this in great detail because it will pay off later. Share this with the kids and their parents so they know where to see them before the season starts.
c. Use this information to remind players of areas for improvement as they gain skills and confidence throughout the year.
d. After the season, evaluate each player in the same way as before the season. THIS IS WHERE THE KIDS GET EXCITED. Their improvement in many areas will prove to them what their hard work, listening and attitude has done for them. Parents will also greatly appreciate your efforts to show each player’s progress. Also show areas of improvement that they can address themselves in preparation for next season.
e. You’d be shocked at home, many high school, high school, college and professional coaches are missing out on this golden opportunity. This could be your biggest contribution to the basketball life of your players.
Coaches, I encourage each of you to put your own heart and soul into your training. A good youth coach knows that it is 100 times more about communicating with the youth and keeping it simple than it will ever be about fancy play, bad habits or winning!It’s called youth basketball for a very good reason. It’s not about the coach, the V’s, the parents or anyone’s ego………….IT’S ALL ABOUT THE KIDS!
