Oregon Board Game Review

Game overview

Oregon is a western themed game. We are back in 1846 when entire families left their homelands and headed west in search of a new beginning. Despite the Western theme, you won’t find any violence at all in Oregon. No shooting, no cowboys and no sheriff. You have to deal with other players in peace, counting on your planning and investment skills.

The game board is a map of Oregon, divided into five columns and five rows. In both columns and rows we find the same five images (wagon, bison, settler, eagle, campfire). The goal of each player is to cleverly place buildings and farmers on the board to get the maximum number of points. Each player starts with a hand of 4 cards (3 landscape cards and 1 building card), 14 farmers of their suit (the 15th is placed on the scoring track), two tokens (an extra turn and a joker), and a starting tile. On a player’s turn, he must place at least one of his farmers or build one building on the board. To place a farmer, you must play two of his landscape cards and place the farmer on an empty space (except water spaces) located at the intersection of the row and column corresponding to the symbols shown on the cards (the player decides which card represents the row and which column). If he chooses to place a building, he must play a landscape card and a building card. The landscape map determines the row or column on which the building can be placed, and the building map, the type of building. He then takes the corresponding construction tile from the supply pile and places it on any empty column or row space designated by the landscape card. Of course, no building can be placed anywhere on the map, but only on the space with the appropriate background color. So, a port, for example, must be placed next to a water area, and mines (gold or coal) can only be placed on a mountain area. By placing farmers and buildings, players earn points. If they place farmers, they earn points for each building their farmer is adjacent to (diagonal counts) and he also takes 5 points if he manages to form a group of 3 adjacent farmers (in this case diagonal does not count). If they place buildings, they earn points for each farmer the building is next to (other players’ farmers also earn points). After playing the cards, the player can decide whether to use his extra token on the turn (if it is on his active side) or end his turn. If his turn ends, he must return his hand to 4 cards (provided he has at least one building and one landscape card in hand). Then it’s the next player’s turn.

The game ends as soon as all the farmers of the player’s color are placed on the board, or more building stacks are used up (depending on the number of players, from 2 to 4). The last round is played until the end, until all players have made the same number of turns.

The first impression

Oregon is a fast game that is easy to learn, but requires good planning and a lot of attention while playing. You have to be very flexible in your strategy, because sometimes in the game you may need to change it to get the maximum advantage of the way buildings and farmers are placed on the board. You must also always be ready to seize opportunities for yourself and deny opportunities to rivals.

Components

I think Hans Im Gluck, as a publisher, guarantees a good level of component quality. And Oregon is no exception. Good quality box, well drawn board, nice cards (both buildings and landscapes), building tiles, coal and gold tiles, 60 wooden mips in 4 colors (15 each) and 8 large chips (extra turn and jokers). 7/10

Playing

Oregon combines some different mechanics in a good way. Tile placement, worker placement, area control, card drawing and why not hand management as you can decide if you can use some cards in your hand at the moment or keep them for the next round. It is easy and complicated at the same time and in each round you have to make decisions about the best actions. 8/10

Learning curve

Easy to learn. The rulebook is well written and it will be easy for an intermediate player to get started with the game. It can be played at any time and by any group due to its short playing time (45′-60′) and medium difficulty. 8/10

The theme

Oh well…it’s the Eurogame. So the topic is not his forte. The West in this game is not what you always imagined. On the other hand, the map is a good reminder of the theme, as are the images on the maps or the miple with its huts. You don’t feel like you’re in the real Oregon, but you can feel like a cowboy at times. Without a gun of course… 6/10

Replaiability

No game is the same. So far I have played over 50 games either with a group of friends or in the online version. There are different things and different challenges in each game. 8/10

Fun

Any game that is fairly easy, but requires a lot of strategic decisions and challenges, and is played within an hour at most, seems fun to me… 7/10

Advantages:

  • Easy to learn but challenging enough
  • Play time
  • It can be played by different types of players
  • Nice components
  • A’A

Against:

  • Off topic. Fans of western-themed games may be disappointed.

Overall: 7.3/10
